New Years Day in Virginia City

Dana & Leslie Loomis traveled to Reno this holiday to be with family and we got to see them on Sunday. Jeffery and Dorothy Wilson spent the night in Reno on New Years Eve, so Grant and I drove over Sunday morning to join them on a jaunt up to Virginia City (not far from Reno). It's an old silver mining town and still has some of the original buildings. It was a really fun day, catching up with everyone. We walked all over town and enjoyed a nice lunch. Our final stop was at the old cemetary which was quite full of people walking around, even young people. I guess history buffs are no certain age. What a great day!

Sunday - Family Gathering at Great-Gramma's House

Zoey had a game to go to, so Annie took her to it and we picked up Ben and Georgia to drive up to Pembroke. The gals joined us up there, as did Lucy and Hannah. It was so fun being together, 4 generations! Mom & Lucy provided a lovely feast. The weather was warm and the company couldn't be beat.

We went back to Mom's, did chores, visited, packed our bags, and had a picnic supper, before hitting the hay. Mom fixed us a little breakfast early the next morning and we headed back to TF Green airport and home. I hope we can do it again before too long...being with family is so special!!

I got up early today and drove over to 40 Steps along the Cliff Walk and hiked a bit while Grant was still asleep. Later in the morning, we picked up Ben, Annie, and Georgia and drove out to Fort Adams State Park. Grant got most of the great pictures because I walked and talked, but I share a few of my photos here and hope to get Grant's on here later. We had lunch at the ever-famous Flo's Clam Shack and got the family home in time to meet Zoey's bus. Later, we went back over to their house, met their friends Ryan, Kendra, and Faith and had a delicious supper that Annie cooked, although she was "gadding" about taking Zoey to cheerleading practice and a Pop Warner dance. It was a wonderful day, and another one is on for tomorrow!

Despite 2 delays, Ruth and Isabelle finally managed to board their plane and head home. While we waited, we found a couple fun things to do.

Monday - Labor Day

After breakfast at Tobin, Dorothy & Jeffery drove Ruth & Isabelle on a scenic trip up the Caribou Road, where they stopped to dunk Isabelle's toes in the Feather River. Then they moseyed up to Quincy and back to Gramma and Grantpa's house. We had lovely visits, played Scattergories, and Grant cooked up a great batch of build your own tacos! My friend Barbara came by to meet my granddaughter and re-meet Ruth, and Kristine, Alex, and the pups joined us for dinner and fun.

Great Aunt Dorothy (GAD) and Great Uncle Jeffery (GUJ) picked up the ladies from the Serpentine Canyon mishap (see following post) and took them down to stay the night at Tobin! The following pictures were taken by Dorothy and Jeffery, who were totally enchanted by both Ruth and Isabelle! They had a bit of trouble getting to sleep, but GUJ took Isabelle on a walk under the stars and it finally worked. This tiny gal just doesn't want to miss a minute!

I decided that despite Isabelle having plenty of things to play with, I'd let her try out the old-fashioned and much beloved wooden spoon and cooking pot. Here are some of the shots I got of her.

And then we packed up Ruth, Isabelle, stuff, foods, and headed down to Tobin, where Ruth and Isabelle are spending the night and I was supposed to spend the day. It was not to be however....

A rock leapt right out into the road and my already meager right front tire made the ultimate sacrifice.
We were able to pull over into a turn-out at the east end of the Serpentine Canyon. I texted Grant to come help me, and we used Ruth's phone to call the Wilson's to come get Ruth and Isabelle. Ruth and I tried to figure out a way to change the tire, but the car is so low, we couldn't get the jack under it.

Thank gawd for Grant and Jeffery, who finagled something, got the tire changed to the donut, and we all headed our separate ways....me in the truck to keep Grant in sight, him driving my car with the donut tire, and The Wilson's headed down to Tobin with R&I to have their visit. We'll all get back together tomorrow afternoon for a gathering of friends and family before our girls head back to Reno to take the plane home to Washington!

Thursday Evening at the Plumas-Sierra County Fair

Dorothy came into town tonight to spend the night. Grant was still up at Eagle Lake (arrived home later this evening), so we went over to the Fair around supper time, ate our annual corndog, and visited a few of the exhibits. The gardens were especially lovely, as were the vegetables, compared to our poor year last summer. The number of scarecrow entries was impressive, including ones that accentuated the theme of this years fair, Past and Future! And of course we had to visit the animal exhibits so Dorothy could bond with the pigs, and the art and quilt barns. It's "country fun" but I enjoyed myself very much! In fact, Grant and I are planning to go to the Parade tomorrow morning and maybe the Fair again, since he hasn't been yet (and I forgot my annual small bag of homemade peanut brittle).

Grant gets to go up to Eagle Lake for work this week, so he packed up the service truck with his gear for the off-work hours. He took the tipi and the kayak, both of which he made and is loving getting to use,! I can't wait to see his pictures when he comes home!

I met Aussie Glenda on my online recovery site (where I have made and met many friends) and when I heard that they were taking a tour of the USA on a Honda Goldwing, I invited them to stay with us if they happened to be coming through our area. It turns out they were and so they arrived Wednesday and stayed til Friday. They are wonderful, generous, friendly, funny, interesting, and very dear. Both Grant and I really enjoyed having them! Dorothy came up to visit on Thursday and met them. It was very fun! Here are a few photos to memorialize the time they were here.

The view from the top of Mt. Fuji is way better than from the bottom. I can honestly say it’s the most physically challenging thing I have ever done but it was worth it. I hiked it with a gaggle of folks from the ship. We managed to summit in about 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Grant bought me a flag for my birthday this year. I've been wanting a big one for the last few years, but never have done anything about it. I mentioned it in passing to Grant this Spring and he remembered!!!

Grant usually puts up the shade tarp on the deck in June, when it starts to get hot. Although we enjoy the evening shadows created by the sun moving past the house by around 5pm in the summer, we also like to use our deck in the morning. It's been a coolish, wettish Spring/Summer, so we have been able to do some of our normal summer tasks a little later this year. We're still marvelling at how lush everything is compared to last year, when we had little to no success with gardens.

Dorothy and I finally opened our birthday week box from our mother back east. She sent mementos from family, including things from my godfather, beeswax candles, hand-stitched needlework guest towels made by SLL, and other fun things. Here are three pictures that Jeffery took, but which I had forgotten were on my camera until I discovered them today! Love you Mama! Love you Jeffery! Love you Twino!

The Walmart bag contains two very purple towels that I thought would go perfectly in D&J's green and gold bathroom....we also exchanged plants and Dorothy gave me a fun hippy blouse that makes me feel young and pretty! Everyone should have a birthday week....make it last as long as possible!

We went up to McArthur for the Weekend, to visit with our friends, help with chores, go out to eat for my birthday, and have a 4th of July trip home that was extra special!

Father's Day 2011 at Grover Springs State Park

Our annual Father's Day campout with Dana & Leslie, Dorothy & Jeffery & Kyria, Kristine & Alex (with their beautiful white boxers, Xena and Brock), and Grant & happened this year at Grover Hot Springs, near Markleeville, California. We had so much fun! D&J brought bikes to share, there were rides, there were jogs and hikes.

We talked and ate like mad, took the drive up to Ebbet's Pass, ate dinner at JT's Basque Restaurant in Gardnerville, and just enjoyed each other so much. Kristine and Alex explored the area with the dogs, Kyria, Dana, and Leslie jogged, Jeffery and Kyria rode bikes to Markleeville, Dorothy and Grant rode bikes to the Hot Springs. It was very hard to part company after a lovely weekend, but knowing that Dana & Leslie will be making a 2nd home in Reno makes it a little easier!

On Saturday, I walked in my garden and then I went down the Canyon to visit with Dorothy & Jeffery, Dick, and Barbara, view the gardens at Tobin, and see the new paint job on Dorothy's Post Office! Happy Birthday Jeffery Wilson! We missed you at our weekly gathering/sleepover, but we had a nice dinner fixed by Kyria, and the newlyweds, Kristine & Alex, also came over with the dogs for a meal and an evening of Wii. Grant amused himself by using a laser pointer to play with the pups, as you can see. By the way, Jeffery, the Wii told us several times that it was your birthday today!!! Kyria and Dorothy came for dinner and the night as usual on our weekly sleepover. Jeffery didn't make it because he is in Arizona/Utah with our friend Dick checking out Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. Kyria had been working all day in Greenville and was cold and wet (it rained/snowed today).

We watched tornado videos on the Weather channel because they are having such severe storms in the midwest currently (hopefully Kyria and Jeffery will get work with FEMA on the cleanup). We played Wii, and Grant fixed fondue for supper. Just as Dorothy arrived around 3, we had heavy snow squalls, but it didn't stick. At 9 pm, we looked outside only to discover snow sticking to everything. May 25th for goodness sakes! Here are some of the pictures to commemerate the day.
