Back during the first year I met Grant, he gave me some irises that had been at a house he was renovating and I planted them, thinking it was nice of him, but not really knowing much about them. I found a few more in the "swamp" out at the back of the property where some unknowing soul had dumped their yard debris. I put them here and there and kind of forgot about them. There were only 2 varieties and they were pretty, but I wasn't really awed or anything.
Then Grant took me up to meet his college friend Ben and his mother Dolores, who runs a Pig Ranch. I discovered that her family was renown for breeding irises! She has a huge collection, but unfortunately I didn't get to see them that visit because of the season. Over the years, I've seen many of them during visits, and Grant has brought me home several as gifts from her. My friend Jay gave me the "black" ones you'll see below. Last year, Dolores honored me with several of her family's particular species....the William Carrillo, also pictured below. They are stunning flowers and I'm delighted to discover that I have 6 different varieties. I think I've discovered a new addiction.
